Barbara Kalin Stays True to Herself
Now Devotes All Her Time to Painting and Has Her Own Art Show to Boot

By Kelly Callaghan

The influence of Mexico's colorful existence and heritage displays itself in the artwork of Barbara Kalin. The 60-year-old, self-described expressionist painter has spent her whole life creating art, from painting people portraits on the boardwalks of Atlantic City, NJ, to capturing the bright light of sun-drenched Greece.

These paintings and others all figure prominently in her collection, as well as her life. For the past two winters, Ms. Kalin has traveled to the state of Oaxaca, Mexico, where she has spent a few months people watching and looking for that one, true perfect scene to paint.

Many of the pieces she's created as a result of these trips in addition to work created over the past four years, are part of an exhibit of her work running through October at the Atrium Gallery in the Warner Theatre in Torrington.

JoAnn Heard, an administrator at the gallery and a member of its board of directors, said for anyone who has traveled to Mexico, Ms. Kalin's artwork would surely jog their memories. "I think for people who have never been to Mexico, it makes you want to go," she said.   more >
